Barb Guenette
- Board Member
Canada
Email Barb
Barb started clogging in 1981 when a fellow square
dancer introduced her to “a new form of dancing”.
Together, they decided that the teen square dancers
might enjoy learning this dance form so they started
classes that same year. With the encouragement of
the caller for the teens & a book written by Sheila
Popwell, they held clogging classes before the teen
square dance. Barb’s friend moved away to start
married life & left Barb holding the bag. Turned
out the teens weren’t all that interested in
clogging but there were some adults who were. Barb
was one step ahead of her dancers until 1988 when
she was invited to become a member of the Northwest
Clogging Association. That first workshop was a
huge eye-opener to her. Since that first workshop,
Barb has attended all but one NWCA workshop & taught
at several of them. She has served on the Board of
NWCA as secretary, Vice President, Publicity &
Program. In 2004, Barb was awarded the Val Mackey
award from the NWCA for the person that year it was
felt had promoted clogging the most. Barb has
also taught at 3 Canadian National Square Dance
Conventions, 7 Provincial Conventions (4 of which
she coordinated), 8 C.L.O.G. National Conventions &
several regional workshops. She attained her CCI in
1998 & in 2002 organized the first Canadian CCI
training session. She now mentors other instructors
in their CCI training & instructs at CCI sessions at
National Conventions. Barb teaches 3 clogging
classes/wk & has taken some of her dancers to the
Austrian Alps Performing Festival. Her love for
travel also took her & her dancers on a clogging
cruise to the western Caribbean. Together with her
husband Larry, she sponsors the annual Sealion Stomp
clogging workshop in Nanaimo, B.C. They have done
this for 18 years. She & Larry have been married 38
years & have 2 daughters & 4 grandchildren. Barb
retired in Dec 2006 after 40 years of working as an
x-ray tech & is now enjoying being at home pursuing
all the activities she loves – family, hiking,
sewing, gardening & clogging. |
